What causes bone on bone?

Osteoarthritis is a medical condition that occurs due to the degeneration of the cartilage between the bones. It is not a condition of the bone itself but rather the cartilage that holds the bones firmly together. The cartilage is essentially a lubricating cushion that joins one bone to the other.

It can decay as a person ages, and that introduces a whole world of problems to the body. When the cartilages degenerate, your bones tend to make direct contact with each other and creates friction. As the space between the two bone joints lessens, they start touching each other, and it causes severe discomfort.

Symptoms of bone on bone

Since pain in the knee can mean a lot of things, it is not always apparent if you have osteoarthritis. But there are some symptoms that you can look out for to give you an idea if you have this condition. If the symptoms match, you should get the help of a doctor and start wearing a knee brace to halt its progression.

Pain in the joint

The first symptom of osteoarthritis is severe pain in your knee joints. It will start with slight pain, but you will notice leaping increment of it in a few days. You need to keep in mind that the degeneration of the cartilage does not cause pain but rather when the bone enlarges or makes contact with each other.

Furthermore, you might also feel tenderness in the joints of your knee. If the feeling persists, you should not overlook it. As the joint capsule stretches, it could cause other problems like microfractures or other structural issues.

Difficulty in movement

Your cartilage is responsible for the alignment and operation of the knee. Any form of decay will cause you difficulty when you try to move. You will suffer from instability, along with the pain. As the cartilage wears down, you will be confined to bed, being unable to move your knee at all.

It will be hard for you to balance your body, and you might notice misalignment in your knees. The deformity might be either varus (inward) or valgus (outward). But no matter which one it is, you should never ignore it.

Other symptoms

Apart from the two symptoms mentioned above, you might also feel tingling in the joints or even numbness. The pain might not be limited to your legs even. It can cause you to feel weak, cause headaches, or even induce fever.

Use crutches or walking supports

It is best not to put additional pressure on your knee when you are diagnosed with osteoarthritis. You will only be hurting yourself further by walking unsupported. A pair of crutches will not only help you stabilize your movement but also takes a lot of pressure off your knee.

Hot or cold therapy

Hot or cold therapy also works wonders when it comes to giving you pain relief. Using a hot water bag or an ice pack on your knee joints will reduce inflammation which can help you feel a lot better. You can also take some additional painkillers under your doctor’s supervision.

I had a Quadriceps tendon rupture in October. I have been exercising and very very slowly I think I’m making progress, however, as I walk my knee buckles. Is there a brace that would give me the flexibility of moving around lets say a tennis court and would give me support in case I do buckle. I feel that if I can move around the court I would be able to strengthen my knee in those areas where I would need to strengthen without having to worry about it buckling.

I appreciate your time
